A COMPLETE JOURNEY TO JAKHU TEMPLE, SHIMLA — BY FOOT, CAR & CABLE CAR
Nestled high above the beautiful hill town of Shimla, Jakhu Temple is one of the most famous attractions in the region. Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the temple is known not only for its religious significance but also for its breathtaking location, peaceful surroundings, and the giant Hanuman statue that dominates the skyline of Shimla. Visiting Jakhu Temple feels like a perfect blend of spirituality, adventure, and natural beauty.
During my trip to Shimla, I explored Jakhu Temple in three different ways — by foot, by car, and by cable car. Surprisingly, each journey offered a unique experience and a completely different perspective of the hill and its surroundings.
The first time, I decided to trek to the temple on foot. The walk began near The Ridge and slowly climbed upward through dense forests filled with tall pine and deodar trees. The uphill route was steep in several places, and within minutes I could feel the effort in my legs. However, the cool mountain breeze and peaceful atmosphere made the climb enjoyable. As I moved higher, the crowded streets of Shimla slowly disappeared behind me, replaced by the sounds of birds, rustling leaves, and temple bells echoing through the forest. Every now and then, the path opened up to stunning views of the town below, making the tiring climb absolutely worthwhile.
One thing every visitor quickly notices around Jakhu Temple is the presence of monkeys. The temple is famous for them, and locals often warn tourists to be careful with food, sunglasses, or shiny objects. While the monkeys can seem intimidating at first, they usually leave people alone if not disturbed. Watching them jump across trees and railings added an amusing element to the journey.
On another day, I chose the more comfortable option and visited the temple by car. The drive to Jakhu Temple was much easier and especially suitable for families and elderly travelers. The road leading up the hill was narrow and winding, passing through beautiful green stretches of forest. Although the drive was short, the mountain scenery along the way made it enjoyable. Parking near the temple can become crowded during weekends and tourist season, but the convenience of reaching the top without a strenuous climb makes traveling by car a preferred choice for many visitors.
The most exciting part of my Jakhu Temple experience was undoubtedly the cable car ride. The Jakhu Ropeway starts near The Ridge and carries visitors high above Shimla within just a few minutes. As the gondola slowly moved upward, the panoramic views became absolutely mesmerizing. From above, I could see colorful rooftops spread across the hills, endless cedar forests, winding mountain roads, and mist floating over distant peaks. The short ride felt more like a sightseeing adventure than simple transportation. It was peaceful, scenic, and easily one of the highlights of the entire trip.
No matter which route you choose, the sight of the giant Hanuman statue at the top instantly captures your attention. Towering high above the temple complex, the massive orange statue can be seen from almost every corner of Shimla. Standing beneath it feels surreal because of its sheer size and presence. Around the temple, devotees quietly offer prayers while travelers admire the stunning Himalayan views surrounding the hilltop.
In my opinion, the best time to visit Jakhu Temple is early in the morning when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are smaller. Summers offer comfortable sightseeing conditions, while winters transform the hill into a magical snowy landscape. Even during monsoon season, the lush greenery surrounding the temple creates a beautiful atmosphere, though the trekking paths can become slippery.
Visiting Jakhu Temple turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of my Shimla journey. Whether trekking through peaceful forest trails, driving along winding mountain roads, or soaring above the hills in a cable car, every path to the temple had its own beauty. For anyone visiting Shimla, Jakhu Temple is not just a place of worship — it is an unforgettable Himalayan experience.
